Secrets of Kyoto Hanamachi history: Shimabara Tayu(Private)

Founded in the 17th century, Shimabara is Kyoto’s oldest Hanamachi(licensed entertainment quarter) — a refined world once enjoyed by aristocrats, samurai, cultured elites and even the Emperor.
This bespoke experience offers an intimate journey through Shimabara’s history, culminating in a private ozashiki with a Tayū. Within a cultural setting seldom accessible to ordinary visitors, you will encounter traditions that transcend mere performance.
Masterfully trained in classical dance, music, tea ceremony, and poetry, the Tayū is the highest-ranking courtesan, distinct from Geiko or Maiko.
More than a simple event, this is a rare and serene immersion into the sophisticated social culture of Edo-period Kyoto.
