OISHII STREET Traditional Life Nishiki Market Tour Monitor Tour Report

2024.10.25

On Monday, September 30, 2024, we conducted a monitor tour of the currently planned OISHII STREET ~ Traditional food of KYOTO ~ Nishiki Market Tour. We invited four international students who are usually work for WAKJAPAN’s field trip programs as guests, and they toured Nishiki Market with a guide just like in the real tour and enjoyed making Shokado bento in our townhouse. This tour is being planned in collaboration with the Nishiki Market Shopping District Promotion Association, and the guide and guests will wear an armband with an official mark certified by the association and tour Nishiki Market.

We started at Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, introduced the groundwater that has supported the market, and then headed to Nishiki Market. Before starting the shopping, we gave each international student a Furoshiki and had them make a bag. These Furoshiki will be used as shopping bags. Here, we will also introduce the “Mottainai spirit” that is deeply rooted in Japan.

After that, we stopped by the greengrocer, miso shop, yuba shop, dried food shop, sesame shop, gluten shop, tamagoyaki shop, tempura shop, Japanese sweets shop, fish shop, pickle shop, tofu shop, etc. in Nishiki Market to buy ingredients for the lunch box.
These shops sell ingredients or foods that are eaten in daily life by locals. On this tour, we go around such shops with a guide and enjoy communicating with the shop staff while learning about traditional Kyoto food. We have chosen these shops to stop by with the hope that the benefits from tourists will reach the shops selling traditional ingredients.

On the way, we were given a special look at the “Downwell” which is not open to the public. It used to be used as a refrigerator, and the international students were very surprised at how deep it was.

After finishing shopping at Nishiki Market, we moved to Wak-wak-kan and enjoyed making Shokado lunch boxes.

They made Dashi(soup stock)using kelp and dried bonito flakes, miso soup, rice balls, cut and arrange the ingredients they chose themselves, and arranged the colorful ingredients in a lacquered Shokado bento. After making their own bento, it’s finally lunch time! While looking at the beautiful courtyard garden of the townhouse and chatting with the guide, they enjoyed the taste of Kyoto.

Based on the opinions of each store and the feedback from the international students from this monitor tour, we would like to further improve this tour.

*This monitor tour was also featured on NHK News on Thursday, October 3rd.
